There are fewer things more annoying than arriving home to a basement flood, or walking downstairs and finding mold damage all around and feeling helpless. There can be quite a lot of damage from water logged carpets, cupping hardwood floors, and water damaged drywall. Soaked belongings can likewise be destroyed particularly if the water damage has been going on a long time prior to being found and valuable items like family heirlooms and photo albums will just make matters worse. Fortunately understanding the reasons why basements flood and how to prevent future water damage can help alleviate this annoyance.

In order to fix a basement that’s experienced water damage and help prevent it from happening once more it’s it important to know the origin of the water loss. When homeowners experience wet basements for the first time, it is imperative to determine if the water problems are going to reoccur or if it was a one-time event. Essential to solving this question is determining where the water is coming from. In well populated areas there are various sources of water that can enter a basement and cause damage, firstly after a storm surface water can run down foundation walls and then into the basement. Groundwater in water-saturated soils being pushed into the basement by hydrostatic pressure can also cause major issues. Storm sewer water from the municipal storm sewer system can back up into the home’s existing perimeter foundation drain and leak into the basement. Although this can only happen if the perimeter foundations drain system is connected to the municipal sewer system. Lastly sanitary sewer water from a combined municipal storm/sanitary sewer system backing up into the home’s drain system, can cause sewer water to come up through sink drains and floor drains on lower levels.

To help eliminate, or at least reduce the risk of water damage due to water entering the basement follow these handy tips:

Dampness or standing water in basements and crawl spaces may be evidence of a plumbing leak or improper drainage, which can lead to structural problems and mold damage which could result in amold company needing to be hired.

Inspect your homes gutter systems often and remove any debris to prevent blockages.

If your home is in an area with a lot of trees that loose their leaves, purchasing gutter guards could be a time saving investment.

Make sure your downspouts extend several feet away from the house to carry water away from the foundation. If they don’t, you can purchase extensions that attach to your downspouts.

Check where the gutters meet the stucco on the outside of you home, sometimes builders don’t stucco behind the gutter end piece correctly and water could be pouring into your home without you knowing.

Fill in any low spots around the house and amend any cracked paved areas or paving that slopes towards the house so water drains away from the foundation.

Inspect door and windows for cracked or missing caulking and replace as needed.

Check for damage or deterioration around the flashing at chimneys, skylights, vents and other junctions.

Check the grade of the earth around the house to determine if it slopes towards or away from the house as that may be the source of the water? If they do slope towards the house, an engineer may need to be called to evaluate the situation and come up with an appropriate solutions.

Investigate your gardens irrigation systems to make sure you are not over watering and causing excessive run-off towards the foundations? Avoid placing lawn irrigation next to the house.

It’s now October and the summer is rapidly disappearing behind us, as we drift in autumn and ultimately Christmas. Is it still too early to be talking about Christmas shopping? It would seem not as many people have already started buying all of their gifts online already. Figures have shown that it is a highly productive sales period for traders who, at this time, busily maintain and improve their websites to cope with the demand.

You can now buy so many things from the big companies such as toys, games, clothes and books which is the main reason behind them being able to do so well even in this current climate.

There are many markets out there with items that when first thinking of you wouldn’t think to buy for a close relative at all. Would you buy someone a telephone from one of the amazing range of funky retro phones that are available? Anyone who loves a bit of nostalgia will certainly get on with one of these, cool retro phones. The sleek clean lines, soft curves contrasting with the cold metallic dialling feature make an elegant addition to any home.

It would seem that there are a few people out there who like collecting buddha statues. They often sit in prominent places in the house, such as the fireplace hearth where they give balance and tranquillity.

Believe it or not, certain loved ones will enjoy getting a new water bottle for Christmas. It would seem that these products have come back after a big gap of no one really being interested in them at all. I can remember when I was younger, and living at home, the hot water bottles were a functional item that went unseen for most of the year. In fact even when the weather turned inclement, and the bottle came into use, it was still tucked away in the bottom of the bed in the dark!

It is often the case that people have lovely big homes but are not happy with the amount of light that they get in them. In actual fact, it is often those people who have deeper rooms and areas within the house that are some distance from any windows that have the biggest problems with light. People can do something about this of course by adding skylight windows, reducing furniture or using white dining room furniture for example, and even restructuring parts of the house to open them up. If you have the money and time for these and don’t mind the disruption of the work then great, but for everyone else, here are some options that be implemented with much greater ease.

Mirrors. One of the most effective and efficient ways of manipulating light is to use mirrors. This is because they are very efficient at reflecting light, hence you can see yourself very well in them. The best way to use them is place mirrors on walls in just the right place to send incoming light from windows, back out the door to other areas. By locating a mirror just outside the door, the light can then be picked up and moved on down the hall or into other rooms or areas of the house. This technique can be used all over the house wherever you are lacking a bit of light or wherever you want a certain area to have an enhanced glow. It’s particularly useful when you have lots of bedroom furniture cluttering up a room, and not much light to start with.

Glass. You can call upon glass to break up the light and send it off in various directions, thus giving all parts of a room some exposure. Using wine glasses on shelves and even glass vases on bedside tables which refract light and send it out at all angles giving an all over glow. Make sure you don’t overdo the glassware however because you can sometimes end up ‘trapping the light’ within all the glass.

Combine. You can use a combination of both tricks explained above to squeeze every last drop out of the available light you have. Use mirrors to direct light through glass objects and then smaller mirrors to pick up the refracted light and move it on. You’ll be amazed at just how much extra light you can have without even using electricity.

Mythbusters Ceiling Fan

The awsome Ceiling fan is not a bad thing at all as it can be used instead of air con..

However people seem to use the ceiling fan in the wrong ways including a hat, a means for suicide and of course the urban myth that is beheadings.

So how on earth does someone end up wearing one of these for a hat? Well I lied a bit about the hat, I am really talking about the fan falling on somebodys head and seriously hurting them..

There are many people that will end thier lives by using a ceiling fan. It is often used as a hanging point for people and is seen in many films as well..

The fan does not have the power to behead somebody although many people think it does.. This has been shown in many movies, television programmes and even sometimes in the general media. The television programme Mythbusters proved that by using a replica dummy of the human head that the blade would certainly tear the throat open which of course would lead to death but the fan could not actually behead anyone, which asks the question, where does all of this stuff about fan heaters and ceiling fans originate from?

Most likely from a film director wanting to get a bit of a shock from an audience after all this is what they are paid to do. So although many people have suffered their demises from the ceiling fan over the years it is very unlikely that anyone has been properly beheaded.

On a lighter note the ceiling fan amongst other inventions that include Humidifiers and air filter can actually be more useful to you than deadly.

Getting out of bed and into work everyday is hard enough but when you have to do it in dis-comfort office chairs it just makes it even worse. I have been working at an office for over twenty years and the furniture in the office itself is awful, it is uncomfortable and old fashioned which thus makes the working side of things so much harder. Several companies out there offer excellent office furniture to meet requirements of the modern office but that is just not the case where I work. It has been way too long now where our office chairs are really not up to the task and it does sound a little pedantic but if you have an office chair that helps support your back then it will make the day go by easier.

I have seen the future in the world of office furniture and it lies within ergonomic office chairs. They are comfortable, modern design and great value! Plus they will help you if you have a bad back which is important to me as I have regularly have issues with lower back pain and a good chair is crucial to me doing my job properly and efficiently. I have had to take regular trips down to the hospital over the last few years because of my constant trauma with not sitting in proper seating. I don’t think I will ever recover now as my back is in constant agony however sitting in an ergonomic styled chair does alleviate some of the pain which is nice.

If you are suffering from back pain then I would highly recommend mentioning to your office to get some new and ergonomic office furniture as this is definitely the way forward. The design of the chair does not put any pressure on any part of your back so what ever you do at work will result in a much easier and stress free day.

So all week you have been working then you come home to a partner saying work around the house needs to be done right? Well now (6 months down the line) you have actually come to replacing those bedside tables and awful white wardrobes with brand new bedroom furniture or furniture for another room.

New furniture means only one thing, the room itself will need decorating. The only room in which this can be a good thing is going to be the front room as you now have the excuse of decorating to get a brand new HD T.V.

But the problem is, decorating rarely just takes a weekend to complete. You will then be forced out to choose the new furniture, the new gadgets and the new colours for the room, be warned if you are male you will not have a say in this. You will then need to sit down and prepare for the decoration itself, moving things about and clearing the room out so nothing remains inside.

If you are stripping paint or wallpaper this could take an entire weekend on its own so now you are starting to see that the one weekend chosen for decorating is going to take up more than those 24 hours you are awake during the two days that you have off over the weekend period. Make sure not to decorate on a bank holiday. This is just a recipe for disaster as more DIY accidents happen on a bank holiday than any other day in the year within the UK and I am sure that the USA is not much different in this.

Of course if you are thinking about moving home or have just moved into a new home then taking a week or so off work could be a good idea just so you can get to it in your own time without having to rush an entire weekend on the area in question. Chances are if you are in this boat you have several rooms to decorate and if this is the case a prolonged period of time of work is certainly a good idea just so your house doesnt look like a wrecking ground for a long time period.

Well the same will work for you, when people look around a home they look to see what rooms will need redecorating and what work needs to be done around the home as well as space available. What can you do to sell the house quickly but yet keep the prices of the property high?

As the titles seems to suggest, redecorating could really benefit you here. Take a look at the front garden to begin with. The reason for this being that the front garden is usually going to be the first impression of your house to a potential buyer so having a well kept lawn, flowerbed or whatever you have is key. All that might be needed from this is cutting the hedges and a general tidy up.

The next place to concentrate on is the kitchen. The kitchen is always very important to people when buying a new house. If you think the kitchen is a bit small do not worry as there are things out there that can make it look bigger and better. Again just a clean a tidy may all be what is needed here but if it is more then there is no need to go expensive.

The final major place to concentrate on is the bedroom. Although you may well be taking those bedside tables with you those white wardrobes might actually be attached to the wall and if this is the case painting them may be all that is needed to make the room look a lot brighter. People appreciate that you will be taking all of your bedroom furniture with you but that doesnt stop them from judging the house on the items you have there.

All in all a big decorating week may not be what is needed; sometimes a simple tidy up and a spot of paint will do the trick.

It is a question that baffles many who want to move over to the Capital of England. I would really love to move into London but where should I go to? There are numerous different areas where you could live in London and some of them are far more expensive than others! It is all down to finding a happy medium and getting the most out of what you have.
Anyone moving to London will know that it is one of the most expensive things you will ever have to pay for in your life but it will definitely be worthwhile. The city has so much to offer in terms of entertainment and job opportunities it is hard to say no. First things first Apply for a job and see if you can get somewhere to live which is close to that. The closer you live to your work the more you will save on transport which is always good. Secondly, get a good idea of the cost of rent in the area from the estate agents. Is it worth going a bit further down the road where you can save more on rent? Thirdly, think about what zone you want to live in and see how much bills could be. This should provide an accurate amount that you will be paying out each month. Moving home is an expensive affair you need to organise a company which specialises in London Removals to come and move all of your stuff to your new location. Once you have those three stages in place your move will be made a lot easier. There a selection of companies inside London which specialise in London Removals and and Moving office.
Each district of London has its advantages but in my opinion you can only base a decision on where you get a job. That is the deciding factor for me. Good Luck!

Any respected interior designer will often utter the words “it’s all in the details”. What they mean by this is that you can have lots of stunning colours, huge spaces and luxurious pieces of furniture, but unless your finish is high quality and you have the right accessories, youll never achieve a good look. Below we examine 3 ways to easily make sure you get the accessories right and leave your home looking great.

One Colour Rule. Not many people can mix and match colours that well, so if its often best to keep to one.You don’t need to have all your items exactly the same colour tone, but it’s best to try and stick to a close range. For example, you might have some red pillows, with a red-pink clock on the wall and a ruby coloured candle stick set. If you stick to using the same colour, there will be a nice flow throughout the room and you wont have any unsightly clashing.

Qaulity Matters. If you scrimp and save on your accessories, the end result will be a finish that looks cheap. You don’t have to go out and break the bank, just make sure the important pieces, such as the things people touch and feel are decent quality. Tableware for example is a key item to get right, as they are not only often closely inspected, but people actually use the items in everyday life.

Use Functional Items. As already touched upon, the functional or feature items in your home are the hardest to get right. However, they also have the biggest impact on the design and feel of a room.Select items that match your persona and style. If your not into sports, then please don’t have rowing oars mounted on your walls, or display medals that you got in a charity shop. However if you are a big whisky or wine drinker, having the right glassware on show looks good. You might have a glencairn whisky glass on show or some decanters, it really doesnt matter as long as it represents you well.
