Water damaged basements

There are fewer things more annoying than arriving home to a basement flood, or walking downstairs and finding mold damage all around and feeling helpless. There can be quite a lot of damage from water logged carpets, cupping hardwood floors, and water damaged drywall. Soaked belongings can likewise be destroyed particularly if the water damage has been going on a long time prior to being found and valuable items like family heirlooms and photo albums will just make matters worse. Fortunately understanding the reasons why basements flood and how to prevent future water damage can help alleviate this annoyance.

In order to fix a basement that’s experienced water damage and help prevent it from happening once more it’s it important to know the origin of the water loss. When homeowners experience wet basements for the first time, it is imperative to determine if the water problems are going to reoccur or if it was a one-time event. Essential to solving this question is determining where the water is coming from. In well populated areas there are various sources of water that can enter a basement and cause damage, firstly after a storm surface water can run down foundation walls and then into the basement. Groundwater in water-saturated soils being pushed into the basement by hydrostatic pressure can also cause major issues. Storm sewer water from the municipal storm sewer system can back up into the home’s existing perimeter foundation drain and leak into the basement. Although this can only happen if the perimeter foundations drain system is connected to the municipal sewer system. Lastly sanitary sewer water from a combined municipal storm/sanitary sewer system backing up into the home’s drain system, can cause sewer water to come up through sink drains and floor drains on lower levels.

To help eliminate, or at least reduce the risk of water damage due to water entering the basement follow these handy tips:

Dampness or standing water in basements and crawl spaces may be evidence of a plumbing leak or improper drainage, which can lead to structural problems and mold damage which could result in amold company needing to be hired.

Inspect your homes gutter systems often and remove any debris to prevent blockages.

If your home is in an area with a lot of trees that loose their leaves, purchasing gutter guards could be a time saving investment.

Make sure your downspouts extend several feet away from the house to carry water away from the foundation. If they don’t, you can purchase extensions that attach to your downspouts.

Check where the gutters meet the stucco on the outside of you home, sometimes builders don’t stucco behind the gutter end piece correctly and water could be pouring into your home without you knowing.

Fill in any low spots around the house and amend any cracked paved areas or paving that slopes towards the house so water drains away from the foundation.

Inspect door and windows for cracked or missing caulking and replace as needed.

Check for damage or deterioration around the flashing at chimneys, skylights, vents and other junctions.

Check the grade of the earth around the house to determine if it slopes towards or away from the house as that may be the source of the water? If they do slope towards the house, an engineer may need to be called to evaluate the situation and come up with an appropriate solutions.

Investigate your gardens irrigation systems to make sure you are not over watering and causing excessive run-off towards the foundations? Avoid placing lawn irrigation next to the house.

It’s now October and the summer is rapidly disappearing behind us, as we drift in autumn and ultimately Christmas. Is it still too early to be talking about Christmas shopping? It would seem not as many people have already started buying all of their gifts online already. Figures have shown that it is a highly productive sales period for traders who, at this time, busily maintain and improve their websites to cope with the demand.

You can now buy so many things from the big companies such as toys, games, clothes and books which is the main reason behind them being able to do so well even in this current climate.

There are many markets out there with items that when first thinking of you wouldn’t think to buy for a close relative at all. Would you buy someone a telephone from one of the amazing range of funky retro phones that are available? Anyone who loves a bit of nostalgia will certainly get on with one of these, cool retro phones. The sleek clean lines, soft curves contrasting with the cold metallic dialling feature make an elegant addition to any home.

It would seem that there are a few people out there who like collecting buddha statues. They often sit in prominent places in the house, such as the fireplace hearth where they give balance and tranquillity.

Believe it or not, certain loved ones will enjoy getting a new water bottle for Christmas. It would seem that these products have come back after a big gap of no one really being interested in them at all. I can remember when I was younger, and living at home, the hot water bottles were a functional item that went unseen for most of the year. In fact even when the weather turned inclement, and the bottle came into use, it was still tucked away in the bottom of the bed in the dark!

A real estate project in one of North America’s most desirable new communities has opened show homes and unveiled exclusive designs for everyone to see. The home will feature some exclusive designs including two exclusive kitchens and some state of the art bedroom furniture, which have been hand crafted and designed. Also on show will be a completely new form of bedside table, that can change shape and move about the room to suit your needs.

Albi Homes, a luxury real estate specialist, unveiled further details of its homes in the Cranston community in Calgary, Alberta earlier this week, showing off John Moore’s exclusive white bedroom furniture range at the same time. The whole community is extremely excited to get this new development made, there has almost been no new building or structures put up in the town for over ten years and this has literally been the first!

Valuable real estates includes ‘jewel box’ luxury home designs to choose from with prices beginning from “the low $500,000s”. The overall project features a total of 7.Three acres of private residents’ recreation park, sports courts, with two new schools also nearby. Elsewhere in the development other available real estate includes condo homes, apartments and townhouses.

The design itself looks absolutely astounding. The development has taken almost a whole three hundred and sixty five days so far and people are getting excited as to what the project space will look like later on in the year.

With the amazing amenities in progress and the natural beauty of Cranston, the company are extremely proud to be offering the exclusive opportunity and unique design style with exceptional value at this time. Considering that there is a massive economic slump at the moment the new development has been extremely welcomed with the local community. The current financial slide was mainly caused to people not being able to afford shiny new properties and never paying the mortgages back.

It is often the case that people have lovely big homes but are not happy with the amount of light that they get in them. In actual fact, it is often those people who have deeper rooms and areas within the house that are some distance from any windows that have the biggest problems with light. People can do something about this of course by adding skylight windows, reducing furniture or using white dining room furniture for example, and even restructuring parts of the house to open them up. If you have the money and time for these and don’t mind the disruption of the work then great, but for everyone else, here are some options that be implemented with much greater ease.

Mirrors. One of the most effective and efficient ways of manipulating light is to use mirrors. This is because they are very efficient at reflecting light, hence you can see yourself very well in them. The best way to use them is place mirrors on walls in just the right place to send incoming light from windows, back out the door to other areas. By locating a mirror just outside the door, the light can then be picked up and moved on down the hall or into other rooms or areas of the house. This technique can be used all over the house wherever you are lacking a bit of light or wherever you want a certain area to have an enhanced glow. It’s particularly useful when you have lots of bedroom furniture cluttering up a room, and not much light to start with.

Glass. You can call upon glass to break up the light and send it off in various directions, thus giving all parts of a room some exposure. Using wine glasses on shelves and even glass vases on bedside tables which refract light and send it out at all angles giving an all over glow. Make sure you don’t overdo the glassware however because you can sometimes end up ‘trapping the light’ within all the glass.

Combine. You can use a combination of both tricks explained above to squeeze every last drop out of the available light you have. Use mirrors to direct light through glass objects and then smaller mirrors to pick up the refracted light and move it on. You’ll be amazed at just how much extra light you can have without even using electricity.

This is a general term which can be used to refer to a person or even an article which is stylish rather than fashionable and where the style reflects quality as opposed to newness. You hear a lot about this type of furniture etc and it is first and foremost a fairly casual style of decorating mainly created in pastels and sometimes using antique accessories. It conjures of the idea of old lace tablecloths, light white wardrobes and soft comfortable sofas.

Shabby chic is no particular style, but it balances out elegant pieces with both old and new combined. If you prefer bold colours then probably this is not for you. Usually soft whites, muted grey and pale pinks, blues and greens are the favourite shades used. People buy new old fashioned looking material and sometimes stain them to give the appearance of age and this they do by using tea! The overall effect is then a pattern that looks like a soft creamy white instead of stark white, that just would not look right.

Often the use of floral, striped and checked fabrics are combined to achieve a warm and inviting look. It is however best to keep the colour background the same, for instance white or cream. Then try to select a colour to repeat in every pattern fabric to get the right effect. Almost any piece of white bedroom furniture will suit a shabby chic interior design. Sometimes you may have a piece which can either be sprayed or painted white then sanded at the corners and roughed up to give the appearance of age.Painting furniture white, completely changes it from dark and heavy to light, fresh and clean.

What completes the look of shabby chic is the appearance of chunky large sink in sofas and chairs that are warm and make you feel right at home. In the bedroom, white or rustic beside tables will finish a Shabby Chic look perfectly

The popularity of white furniture, such as bedroom furniture has increased a lot in recent times. People seem to be turning to the minimalist look and the clean feeling that comes with it. When furnishing our home the choice is endless. White furniture can be found in dining tables and chairs, wardrobes, dressers, bookcases and much more. You can even get white bedside tables now.

You will find that the most commonly used colour in interior design is white. This is so particularly in bathrooms and kitchens where cleaning and very importantly, the preparation of food is carried out. This is primarily due to hygiene and of course it makes sense that dirt shows up significantly on white and surfaces are more readily kept germ free.

They say that this is not really a colour as such, it is in fact a neutral.

It was Sir Isaac Newton experimenting in 1666, using a hole in a window shade that allowed a ray of sunshine into a dark room, where a glass prism was placed in such a position that enabled the light to pass through it. He found that the ray of light was refracted when it passed through the prism and spread a beam of multicoloured light in all the colours of the rainbow which appeared as white on the wall beyond.

Newtons conclusion was that white sunlight was a mixture of different types of light, each one being a single pure colour and that each colour was refracted at different degrees, violet by the most and red by the least.

It was found that white light does in fact contain all the colours within it, they are simply not visible as they are being reflected.

I have seen some wonderful interior designs that are entirely white with just the odd addition of one or maybe two other colours introduced into the design. So don’t dismiss the use of white painted furniture in your decor because white interiors, especially it seems white dining room furniture, tends to have a very calming effect and help you relax and feel at home.

The Kitchen is one of the most important rooms in the house there is no doubt about that and it is down to the fact so many things are done in it. There are many people out there who will look out for a nice kitchen when looking to purchase a home so it is worth looking around. So if you are thinking of improving your eco friendly furnishings for your kitchen whether that is for selling purposes or just for your own use then here are a few tips laid down for you.

Keep up with the times. Eco-friendly not only seems to be a great way to improve the environment, it is also in fashion which is why it is good to ahve it in the Kitchen. Recycled glass sets, recycled dinner plates, recycled mugs, bamboo bowls, can crushers, recycled coasters and recycled frying pans are just some of the things that are out there for purchase at the moment.

One of the best things about all of these is that more items are going to be on the way to the general market very soon indeed. A great thing about being eco-friendly is that you do not have to keep it to the utensils in the kitchen you can actually use ingredients that are fair trade and by using products that have been made in a eco-friendly way.

Of course it doesn’t need to stop inside the kitchen, if you are a fan of camping there are a number of things you can buy that do the environment some benefit from the brilliant camp shower to the many other accessories for camping that will actually help the surrounding area you are camping in. and thats the end of that chapter!

My husband and I have been living in our home for more than a decade now, and it has to be said many of the rooms are looking a bit worse for wear.

Unfortunately it would seem that both the bathroom and kitchen have reached the point of no return and now a total revamp is probably going to be required.

The dilemma is where is the best place to start? Currently there appears to be a vast amount of kitchens and bathrooms on the market. Should you be considering a modern theme, maybe traditional, or perhaps just go for the wow factor?

Currently some of our local DIY shops are offering great deals on their kitchens and bathrooms, but is buying at the local DIY store always the best decision?

It might be that you may be best suited buying from a specialist company. Currently some of the larger companies have some absolutely fantastic deals on offer. If you want you can choose Interest Free payments over a 2 year period, maybe you could get all of your electrical appliances thrown into the deal for the kitchen. With the current economic market as it is, the choice is yours and by shopping around you will be able to play companies off against each other, ensuring you get offered the very best deals possible.

Even though you may seem to be getting a great deal, please bear in mind that these companies are still making a profit out of you. Why not have a go at pushing them to lower their prices just that little bit further, after all you have nothing to loose by trying.

When decorating any room, a really important factor is choosing the right accessories. Kitchen accessories can be have surprisingly striking effect on the room as a whole. They have to be just right and fit in with the style you have chosen for your kitchen. The bathroom is a much easier room to decorate. Accessories for the bathroom can be easily mixed and matched, and changed from month to month.

Now though if we decorate the kitchen and bathroom, our lounge is going to look a bit old and tired. Probably it could be a good idea to invest in some homeware. These could certainly brighten up the room and do not have to break the bank. With all this going on at home, it looks like it is going to be a busy couple of months ahead.
